Americans Willing to Try This Classic Super Bowl Snack
Chicken wings are nostalgic for a lot of us, especially during Sunday football games. Americans eat about 1.48 billion chicken wings during the Super Bowl. If you like the boneless variety, do you care if it’s chicken or not? A new poll of adults found that 56 percent would consider a plant-based alternative while watching the New England Patriots face off against the Seattle Seahawks.
“You can score a touchdown for your health this Super Bowl by passing on chicken wings, cheesy dips, and meaty chili and instead opting for plant-based favorites like buffalo cauliflower or black bean chili,” says Stephanie McBurnett, RDN, a nutrition educator for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), which created the poll and gathered answers from more than 2,000 adults.
Tom Brady, well-known for his no-meat athlete life, does OK for himself, with seven Super Bowl Rings and counting, he probably has a team of registered dietitians helping him to achieve his goals.
Are Plant-Based Wings Better For You?
Well, they’re still heavily processed. They are high in fiber and lower in fat than other wings. Studies show that plant-based diets give you all the nutrients your body needs, except for a few B vitamins that you get from some meat, for training and competition. However, during the Super Bowl, what’s more important?
For people who prefer boneless chicken wings, the dipping sauce is just as important as each bite. But, for people who prefer a chicken wing bite with bones, you may prefer nature’s original.
According to athletes who have adopted a plant-based diet, after eating animal meats for protein, they often say their recovery time is improved, as is their digestion.
Whatever you are served at your Super Bowl party, keep an open mind and try all the offerings.
