Tourists Could Face Jail Time, Thousands in Fines for Vapes
Traveling on a budget or figuring out the finer things in life as a tourist brings its own unique set of challenges. Well, add another one in case you're into vaping and want to party south of the border.
In an attempt to curb the growing concern of e-cigarette use among adolescents and a lack of a cohesive framework that governs the industry, lawmakers in Mexico in December 2024 approved a constitutional reform that bans the production, distribution, and sale of vape devices. The law went into effect earlier this month.
For tourists, this means that the new law prohibits bringing vapes into the country. Mexico already has one of the strictest smoking bans in effect, which prohibits the use of cigarettes at beaches, hotels, and parks.
What Fines and Punishments Can You Face?
According to one report, anyone caught with a vape or vaping in public may face fines of up to $12,500.
Tourists can also be detained and face up to 8 years in prison.
If you're on a cruise and dock in Mexico, you're advised to leave vapes behind or not bring them at all. Fox News Digital reports that cruise lines such as Margaritaville at Sea have already started warning guests about the new law.

What's more, the outlet reports that travelers who bring e-cigarettes into the country can be subject to enforcement when passing through customs.
Travel Tips for Vapers in Mexico
Sikary, a vaping sales site, posted a lengthy Q&A to help vapers become familiar with the new law.
The site offers tips for those who regularly vape and plan to travel to Mexico.
"Do not bring vaping devices or e-liquids. The safest option is to leave them at home due to the import ban."
Also, "if you must bring a device, be prepared for confiscation upon entry," and "avoid vaping in public spaces."
Need an alternative? The website suggests you should "consider legal nicotine alternatives such as gum or lozenges while in Mexico."
