Mexican President Demands More BTS Concerts
There's no question that K-pop has taken the world by storm over the last decade. Acts like Blackpink and BTS have risen to global megastardom, rivaling Taylor Swift for being the most likely pop act to make teenage girls faint.
K-pop is huge in the U.S., but surprisingly, it's also huge in Mexico. According to Spotify, Mexico is the fifth-largest K-pop market in the world, and the only Spanish-speaking country in the top 10. But when BTS announced their big comeback tour set to start in April — set to coincide with the release of their new album Arirang — only three of those dates were in Mexico. This sent Mexican K-pop devotees into a spiral so deep, the president had to get involved.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Demands More Concerts
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced during her January 26 press briefing that she wrote a letter to South Korean president Lee Jae Myung demanding more BTS tour dates in Mexico, The Guardianreports.
"Everyone wants to go," Sheinbaum declared. “Around 1 million young people want to buy tickets, but there are only 150,000 tickets available." She added, "We have not yet received a response, but we hope it will be positive."
This wasn't the first time Sheinbaum brought up BTS in her news conference, either. On January 19, she praised the group for officially announcing bringing their tour to Mexico. "It's a very famous Korean group that young people love," she said, according to the AP. Is Sheinbaum a closeted ARMY member? Maybe it's not just young people who love them...
As with any modern concert, the resale market is out of control. While the tickets' face value ranged from $100 to $1,030, the resale tickets are selling for as much as $5,300. As such, Sheinbaum announced that Mexico's consumer protection agency would be investigating Ticketmaster, as well as coming down on StubHub and Viagogo for "abusive and disloyal practices."
