Team USA Finalizes Roster for 2026 Winter Olympics

0 0

The 2026 Winter Olympics are just days away, and the United States of America will be well represented at this year's Games.

Team USA released its full roster of Olympic athletes on Monday, and this year's team is the biggest in American history at the Winter Olympics.

232 athletes will take part in next month's Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, highlighted by 18 returning Olympic champions and seven athletes competing in their fifth career Games.

Team USA By The Numbers

Lindsey Vonn (alpine skiing), Kaillie Humphries, Elana Meyers Taylor (bobsled), Hilary Knight (hockey), Evan Bates (ice skating), Faye Thelen and Nick Baumgartner (snowboarding) represent the most veteran Olympians on the roster, each competing for the fifth time.

The team consists of 117 men and 115 women, ranging from age 15 (Abby Winterberger, freesking) to age 54 (Rich Ruohonen, curling). 18 Olympic champions will return to their sport's grandest stage, including Mikaela Shiffrin (alpine skiing) and Chloe Kim (snowboarding) - each two-time gold medalists.

This year's version of Team USA is slightly larger than the team that represented the country four years ago at PyeongChang 2018, and the team that competed at Sochi 2014. Minnesota (26) and California (21) are the best-represented states among Team USA, while states like North Carolina, Georgia and Arizona are sending one athlete each to Italy.

Elite Athletes Back on the Olympic Stage

Vonn is returning to Olympic competition at the age of 41. She's back at one of her sport's most prestigious events after retiring due to a series of devastating injuries. She last competed at PyeongChang 2018, where she won a bronze medal in downhill.

Vonn, who remains the only American woman to win Olympic gold in downhill, made history by becoming the oldest woman to podium in a World Cup race last year.

“It definitely felt nice to prove people wrong,” the skiing legend said about her performance at the World Cup in an interview with SELF magazine. “But…you know yourself better than anyone else. And you have to listen to what you know you can do, and I knew I could do it.”

The Olympic games in Milan Cortina will also mark the first men's hockey tournament to feature NHL players since 2014, and many of the league's best stars are suiting up for the United States.

Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Quinn Hughes and Connor Hellebuyck are among the NHL stars who will represent America in the tournament, where they're expected to eventually meet a Canadian team with its own incredible talent.

The Olympic Games are set to begin with the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, February 6. The Games will conclude with the Closing Ceremony on February 22.
