When ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Takes Place in the ‘Game of Thrones’ Timeline

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the latest prequel in the world of Game of Thrones, following HBO's hugely acclaimed House of the Dragon series—but where does it fall in the franchise's timeline?

HBO's latest prequel is based on George R.R. Martin's short story collection of the same name, often referred to by the names of its two lead characters, Dunk & Egg. The stories center around Ser Duncan the Tall, a lonesome hedge knight looking to make a name for himself, and a young boy named Egg who offers to squire for him.

'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Takes Place 100 Years Before 'Game of Thrones'

The latest prequel in the Song of Ice and Fire world is set approximately 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones—and roughly 80 years after the Targaryen civil war depicted in House of the Dragon.

Crucially, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place many years after the last dragon in Westeros has died, leaving the creatures all but extinct—minus a few priceless eggs across the realm.

This means that while the Targaryen dynasty is still in power throughout A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the family is much weaker than the legends that we hear about in House of the Dragon. This will play a vital role in later seasons of the show, when the Blackfyre Rebellion becomes a major plot point.

How 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Connects To 'Game of Thrones'

Game of Thrones fans may remember hearing about the Blackfyres in Joffrey's stories, but many of the characters in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have direct connections to these royal rebels.

The Blackfyres were led by Daemon Blackfyre and his brother Aegor Rivers, two illegitimate children of Aegon IV who claimed Daemon was the rightful heir to the throne after their father legitimized them on his deathbed.

This story is mentioned several times throughout Game of Thrones, and it's a crucial piece of context to HBO's latest prequel. While it's not strictly necessary to know the outcome of these events from Game of Thrones lore, it will certainly elevate the story to know how things play out for these figures of Westeros history.
