Toyota Issues a Massive Safety Recall That Drivers Should Know About

Even though companies always want to avoid costly recalls, they are an unavoidable reality. There are now two models of Toyota trucks that have become the subject of a nationwide safety recall that drivers should be aware of.

On January 23, 2026, the Toyota Newsroom website revealed that there was a voluntary safety recall for certain Tundra and Tundra Hybrid 2024 and 2025 models. The company stated that approximately 162,000 vehicles in the United States will be affected. Owners are set to be notified of the recall by late March 2026. The announcement included the following description of the issue that necessitated a fix.

"Under certain circumstances, the multimedia display may become stuck on a camera view or display a black image in the subject vehicles. If this occurs, the rearview image may not be displayed while the vehicle is being reversed. In this case, the vehicle may not meet a federal safety standard, and there can be an increased risk of a crash with a person behind the vehicle."

Fortunately for owners, the company described a simple fix that will be provided at no charge. "For all involved vehicles, dealers will update the Parking Assist ECU software, free of charge."

In the automotive industry, there is very little that is as important as being reliable. On December 4, 2025, Consumer Reports published the findings of its 2026 Automotive Brand Report Card, which named Toyota as the most reliable brand overall. The consumer advocate company's website described the methodology they used to conclude that Toyota should get the highest rank.

“The latest Consumer Reports Annual Auto Reliability Surveys gathered information from car owners on about 380,000 vehicles from model years 2000 to 2025 and early 2026. The survey covers up to 20 problem areas, including engine, electric motors, transmission, in-car electronics, and more. CR’s team of statisticians, researchers, and testers analyzed trouble areas and created an overall reliability score for each model and year. Serious problem areas that can lead to expensive repairs are more heavily weighted. Reliability predictions for 2026 models are based on each model’s overall reliability for the past three years, provided that the model hasn’t been redesigned during that time. If there is insufficient data on a model in any given model year, CR uses the brand reliability score to supplement that model’s new car prediction. The survey gathered information from car owners each year about problems they had with their vehicles in the past 12 months.”
