The George Michael Song Oasis’s Liam Gallagher Labeled a ‘Classic’, Comparable to John Lennon’s 'Imagine'

0 2

George Michael and Oasis may seem like a somewhat unlikely pairing, but the British musicians had a surprising respect for one another, with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher crediting the late popstar with writing one of his favorite songs, and even bringing him one step closer to reuniting with his then-estranged brother, Noel Gallagher.

Liam Gallagher Thinks George Michael’s Music Is on Par With His Idol, John Lennon’s

Speaking in the 2017 documentaryGeorge Michael: Freedom Uncut, the Oasis vocalist sang the praises of the popstar's 1990 song, Praying for Time. Gallagher appeared alongside Elton John and Stevie Wonder to discuss their favorite tracks by the artist, who died o Christmas Day 2016.

"In f--king one!" the infamously irreverent singer said as the track began spinning on the record player. "When I hear that, it's right up there, you know what I mean?'

"And then you get into the lyrics," he added. He drew attention to the lyric The rich declare themselves poor, saying "I like it 'cause it's got a bit of a dig."

He then analyzed it in true Liam fashion. "It's like 'you bunch of f--king c--ts, you know, always f--king playing the poverty card."

Perhaps the biggest compliment for the track was that Liam compared it to his greatest musical and aesthetic idol, John Lennon. "It's got a bit of a Lennon vibe. He liked to dig people out."

"I would get on [Michael's] case," Liam continued. "'cause it's a classic."

"I would say it could be cut from the same cloth as Imagine [Lennon's signature hit song]."

Liam and Noel Gallagher Had a Reunion (Of Sorts) at George Michael’s House in 2012

In 2012, three years after Liam and Noel's dramatic fallout and subsequent split of Oasis, the two estranged brothers found themselves attending the same house party at George Michael's residence.

Liam confirmed the story in an interview with Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio in 2019, confirming the pair were there after the London Olympics celebrations.

"I think he was there with his missus and that, and then we balled in and stuff, you know what I mean? And very soon he just understood, you know what I mean?" Liam said in the interview.

According to Liam, the two decided they couldn't stay in the same house together.

"George Michael’s house is big, but it’s not big enough for the both of us, you know what I mean, and one of us had to leave, and it was him."

However, David Austin, a friend and collaborator of Michael's said the pair were very amicable at the bash. “They came to the house and there was a bit of hoo-ha because Noel was there and they hadn’t seen each other for quite a while. Well, they hadn’t seen each other at all," Austin told Radio X.

“I remember George’s PA was going, ‘We’ve got Liam at the front door, are we gonna let him in?’ Yeah, of course, f--king hell, open the door and bring him in.’ And they got on like a house on fire, actually, very amicable, down the end of the garden at the bar.”

David's account of the alleged early Oasis reunion, but in typical Gallagher brothers fashion, what goes on between them is known only between the two of them.
