Is X (Twitter) Down? Social Media Platform Facing Big Outages

Over the weekend Elon Musk announced that X - formerly Twitter - would soon publish the algorithmic code for X’s news feed and ads, so that it can provide more transparency around how its systems decide what each user sees in the app.

“We will make the new X algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users, open source in 7 days. This will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed," he said on the social media platform.

Just days later, X is going through a significant issue.

Is X (Twitter) Down?

On Tuesday, Jan. 13 users started reporting issues with the social media platform. As of 9 a.m. ET, DownDefector noted just over 500 people reporting an issue with X, but that number skyrocketed as the morning rolled on.

Just 20 minutes later over 20,000 reports of the social media platform being down were recorded by DownDefector.

Another Outage for the Social Media Platform?

This would be the latest major outage to hit the social media platform, which suffered a major outage that lasted several hours in November 2025.

"Cloudflare, a major cloud and network service provider reported an outage early on Tuesday, No. 18. The outage left many websites and platforms like X, formerly Twitter, without service for several hours," the Asbury Park Press wrote.

Cloudfare issued a statement at the time revealing it didn't know the direct cause of the issue. “We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors," the company said.

It's unclear if this is a larger issue.
