Apple Teaming With Google Gemini AI To Improve Siri

0 0

Two of the world's largest tech companies will join forces to improve one of the most used personal assistants on the planet. Apple has been a leader in hardware with innovations like the iPhone, iPad and Airpods, but it has lagged behind other companies when it comes to software.

Siri has been a step behind other personal assistants like Alexa and Google Home, and the company is enlisting the assistance of one of its biggest competitors in the space. As AI becomes more of a tool used in everyday life, Apple is looking to implement it into Siri to better serve its users.

"Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology," Google announced in a statement on Monday.

Apple Chose Google Over Other AI Leaders

"These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year."

The companies say the addition of Google's Gemini AI models will "provide the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models," and that they will provide "innovative new experiences" to Apple users who take advantage of the new features.

Apple Intelligence will continue to run natively on Apple devices and through Private Cloud Compute, methods that the companies say will remain consistent with Apple's best-in-class privacy standards.

Bloomberg reported late last year that the two companies had agreed to a deal for the betterment of Siri, a deal that would be worth an estimated $1 billion per year. That reported also noted that Apple would have access to Google Gemini's 1.2 trillion parameters included in its most advanced AI model.

Google Expands Apple's AI Capability

The current Apple model has 150 billion parameters - meaning that the added power and complexity of the Google model could lead to better problem solving and daily applications. Apple also considered other companies with complex and mature AI models like OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude) before deciding to go with Gemini.

Apple advertised an upgraded version of Siri last year, and initially pledged to release it with the unveiling of iOS 26 - a radical change to the iPhone's ecosystem and design language.

“It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year,” Apple said while announcing the delay. Apple Intelligence features throughout iOS, iPadOS and Mac have been met with a tepid response from users, and the company is looking to improve its standing in the AI space as other companies make advancements.

We'll see if the new reliance on Google and its Gemini tools will result in a better version of Siri over the next several months.
