NFL Star Stefon Diggs Gets Major Break in Criminal Case Right Before Playoffs

0 10

New England Patriots wideout Stefon Diggs just received a break before the NFL playoffs even start.

The star receiver's arraignment in his assault case has been postponed until Feb. 13, when the Super Bowl will be long wrapped up. Previously, he was slated to appear in court on Jan. 23, just two days before the AFC championship.

TMZ Sports first reported on the changed date.

Considering the Patriots are the No. 2 seed in the AFC, the six-time Super Bowl champions are favorites to return to the penultimate game.

Diggs, who inked a three-year, $69 million deal with the Patriots last offseason, has been one of their best players in a stunning turnaround campaign. The four-time Pro Bowler reeled in 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns with his new team.

What is Diggs Accused Of?

On Dec. 30, it was revealed that Diggs is facing a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of assault from an alleged incident at his house on Dec. 2. He appeared in court for a motion hearing that day.

The police report cites a woman who says she worked as a private chef for the NFL vet. She claims that Diggs owes her money, and after she had broached the topic, the 6-foot, 194-pound entered her bedroom and smacked her across the face.

The report goes on to say that Diggs tried to choke the woman and put his elbow across her neck, saying it was a "lie" that she had not been compensated. At that point, she says she pushed Diggs away.

She informed police on Dec. 16 before filing charges on Dec. 22.

Diggs denies the episode took place.

"Stefon Diggs categorically denies these allegations," said his attorney, per ESPN. "They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated -- because they did not occur."

Patriots Facing More Criminal Charges

Diggs isn't the only prominent Patriots player who's facing violent criminal charges. Star defensive lineman Christian Barmore is facing a domestic assault charge for allegedly throwing his former girlfriend on the floor over a dispute about air conditioning.

The alleged incident, which happened Aug. 8, occurred in front of the couple's two-year-old daughter, according to the victim.

Heading into the postseason, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel told reporters he was "not disappointed at all" with the criminal distractions.

The 14-win Patriots host the Los Angeles Chargers for the NFL Wild Card round on Sunday night.
