Brett Favre Responds to Prayers About His Health Situation
Brett Favre has seen the recent headlines about his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease, and he is attempting to set the record straight.
Favre, 56, revealed in September 2024 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's, a progressive neurogenerative disease currently without a cure. Over the last several days, word spread around the internet that the legendary quarterback had "given up hope" in his fight.
Not so, Favre clarified Wednesday.
Favre insists he's not giving up
This afternoon, Favre took to Twitter to thank the public for their prayers, but made a point to say he is not backing down and still has hope for a cure.
"Thank you everyone for your prayers and concerns, but contrary to reports, I have not given up hope in my battle with Parkinson’s!" Favre tweeted. "Not sure where this came from — but just like I never gave up on the gridiron —not going to start now. I pray there will be a cure one day and I appreciate you all."
Favre also issued another denial in a statement to TMZ Sports.
"I have absolutely not given up and I am fighting till the end," the Pro Football Hall of Famer said. "Yes I have progressed a little faster than I would have hoped at this point but I’m extremely thankful and blessed!!!"
What specific reports was Favre addressing?
It seems like the first article including a headline about Favre "giving up hope" came out last week and referenced quotes the former NFL MVP gave on his "4th and Favre" podcast.
“But as you well know, there’s no cure. I hear from time to time, ‘Well, they’re five years away from a cure.’ I hope that that’s the case, I really do, but I’m not holding my breath," Favre said on the show. "There’s a lot of people; Michael J. Fox is probably… he and Muhammad Ali have really set the bar high on Parkinson’s and treatments and things of that nature. And I’m sure that when they were diagnosed, they thought, ‘Well, they’ll have a cure in five years. I’ll be fine.’ Well, that’s not the case. So, I I’m optimistic, but again, I’m not holding my breath."
A cure may not be imminent, but it seems to be a stretch to take those words and say Favre has "given up hope," which is what led to today's statements.
