Toyota Recalls 55000 Camry Corolla Cross Hybrids Fire Risk Bolt

0 18

Toyota is recalling 55,000 hybrid vehicles after discovering a bolt inside the inverter can loosen mid-drive, causing sudden power loss or, in worst-case scenarios, a fire. The recall affects 2025-2026 Camry hybrids and 2026 Corolla Cross hybrids. Toyota logged 34 incidents and 15 warranty claims before announcing the recall December 16, but the company hasn't finalized a repair procedure yet.

The defect traces back to the inverter assembly in the hybrid powertrain. If the bolt loosens, it creates an open circuit that triggers sudden power loss—what Toyota calls "limp mode." In some cases, the loose bolt creates a short circuit instead, generating heat that can start a fire while the vehicle is running. Either scenario is dangerous, but losing power at highway speed in traffic gives you almost no time to react safely.

Toyo

What the Recall Covers

The recall includes 51,644 Camry hybrids from the 2025-2026 model years and 3,761 Corolla Cross hybrids from the 2026 model year. Toyota will notify owners by February 13, 2026, but you shouldn't wait for the mail. Check your VIN immediately at Toyota.com/recall or NHTSA.gov/recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is affected.

No fix exists yet. Toyota is working on a permanent solution and will contact owners again once the repair procedure is finalized. All repairs will be free, but there's no timeline for when parts and procedures will reach dealerships. That means if you own one of these hybrids, you're driving a vehicle with a documented defect and no available remedy.

If the defect activates, Toyota's hybrid system warning lights should illuminate on your dashboard. You'll also see the check engine light. Those warnings give you seconds to react, not minutes. Pull over safely, shut down the vehicle, and contact Toyota roadside assistance at 1-800-331-4331.

My Verdict

If you own a 2025-2026 Camry hybrid or 2026 Corolla Cross hybrid, check your VIN today—don't gamble on whether you're in the affected batch. A fire risk is rare but documented. Power loss at speed is more common and just as dangerous. Toyota's warning system gives you a split second to react, and that's not enough if you're already in the left lane doing 70. Monitor your dashboard religiously for any hybrid system alerts, and schedule the free repair the instant Toyota announces the fix is ready. If you're shopping for a used 2025-2026 Camry or Corolla Cross hybrid right now, verify the recall status before you sign anything and confirm the repair has been completed. Don't inherit someone else's deferred fire hazard.
