Mel Gibson, Partner Make Promise to Son After Separating

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have been together for roughly a decade, but are officially ending their relationship.

The 69-year-old actor and 35-year-old screenwriter and director have announced their separation, via PEOPLE, which is also reporting that Gibson and Ross "quietly split" a year ago.

While their romantic relationship is over, Gibson and Ross will forever share a bond through their son, eight-year-old Lars. The pair sent a clear message about their future parenting plans Tuesday.

Gibson, Ross committed to co-parenting

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Gibson and Ross reaffirmed their devotion to Lars, despite their personal differences.

“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” Gibson and Ross said.

Lars is Gibson's ninth child. The Lethal Weapon star also has seven children, six sons and one daughter, with ex-wife Robyn Moore, and a 16-year-old daughter Lucia with his former girlfriend, songwriter and pianist Oksana Grigorieva.

Gibson made a public appearance alongside Lucia and Lars in September 2024, attending the red carpet premiere of his film Monster Summer in Los Angeles.

How long were Gibson and Rosalind Ross together?

According to reports, the pair met in 2014, when Ross was working as a co-writer for a movie script for Gibson's production company. The two began dating a short time later, despite the fact that, at the time, Ross was 23 and Gibson was 58.

“Regarding age and relationships, it’s just a number. She is an adult, and we dig each other,” Gibson told The Mirror in 2016. “It might cause a problem and one has a trepidation about these things, but it’s working out great. She is a really special person. I dig her. So there you go. That’s it. What more can one ask?”

In addition to her screenwriting and directing background, Ross is also an accomplished equestrian, having won a gold medal at the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games.
