Winter Storm Warning Announced as 3 Feet of Snow, 60 mph Winds Approach
The National Weather Service warned of a winter storm expected to dump as much as three feet of snow and bring 60 mph winds over the next few days.
"An intense cyclone is currently in progress across the northern tier of the country early this Monday morning," the NWS revealed. "Impacts from this expansive mid-latitude cyclone range from heavy snow and blizzard conditions across the upper Midwest to the Great Lakes, freezing rain across New England, a quick round of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms moving quickly through the eastern U.S. and across the South, as well as widespread blustery winds to locally damaging winds to these areas. As this system reaches peak intensity early this morning, blizzard conditions can be expected especially over the central Great Lakes."
New York Preparing for 3 Feet of Snow
After Michigan received a battering of snow over the weekend with Marquette, MI seeing more than two feet of snow, New York is set to be hit the hardest over the next few days. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory as freezing rain sets the stage for a dangerous week ahead in the region.
"For the Winter Storm Warning, heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations 2 to 3 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph creating blowing and drifting snow along with whiteout conditions at times," the NWS said.
Travel Warning Issued as Winter Storm Looms
With the winter storm incoming, the National Weather Service warned against travel in the region when possibe.
"Slippery conditions are expected this morning across far northern Jefferson county and the Thousand Islands. Whiteout conditions are expected starting this afternoon and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact travel through the week," it said.
The strongest bands of the storm are expected to hit Monday night into Tuesday.
