National Weather Service Warns Against Travel as 'Life-Threatening' Conditions, 36 Inches of Snow Hit
The National Weather Service is warning against travel as the Great Lakes region is expected to get battered with heavy snowfall and dangerous winds over the next 48 hours.
"Snowfall amounts are expected to well exceed a foot across the upper Great Lakes, particularly along the south shore of Lake Superior where 2 feet of snow is possible," the NWS said. "...The storm center is forecast to move relatively quickly into southeastern Canada, leading to a steady decrease in snow intensity across the Great Lakes during the day today."
The storm is expected to "linger" in the area for the next 48 hours - and beyond - as "an Alberta clipper brings a round of light snow across the upper Midwest on Tuesday, spreading into much of the Great Lakes by Tuesday evening."
National Weather Service Warns Against Travel
A "potent" winter storm is expected to reach its peak intensity in the coming days as New York awaits its powerful impact. Ahead of the storm the National Weather Service warned against travel in Jefferson county as the region could be hit with up to three feet of snow and 60 mph winds.
"Slippery conditions are expected this morning across far northern Jefferson county and the Thousand Islands. Whiteout conditions are expected starting this afternoon and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact travel through the week," the NWS said.
Jefferson County wasn't the only part of the state to receive a warning, though, as the greater Albany area is set to be hit with dangerous freezing rain.
"Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury," the NWS warned.
The worst conditions are expected Monday night into Tuesday morning.
