HBO Max Announced the Cancellation of 4 Shows This Year

HBO Max is one of the most popular streaming services in the country, thanks in large part to its premium library of original shows. However, not all of the original series on the platform will be renewed.

Throughout 2025, HBO Max announced the cancellation of four different original shows, two of which already had multiple seasons before they were ultimately canceled this year.

Here are the three shows that got the axe from HBO Max this year.

The Franchise

Executive produced by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, The Franchise is a satirical comedy television series that depicts a behind-the-scenes look at a film that's part of a larger superhero film franchise.

Despite the prestige and the big names behind the project, the series was canceled after just one season.

Bookie

Debuting on Nov. 30, 2023, Bookie is an American comedy series that follows the chaotic life of a Los Angeles bookie trying to keep his business afloat in a changing industry of legalized sports betting, increasingly unstable clients, and a fast-paced life in Los Angeles.

The show found success immediately and was renewed for a second season, which premiered on Dec. 12, 2024. However, the show did not survive past the second season as it was ultimately canceled in February of 2025.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

Created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, Sex Lives of College Girls is a teen comedy-drama television series that follows the lives of four freshman roommates at the fictional Essex College in Vermont as they all struggle through the personal and academic challenges of the first year of college.

The show was successful for the first two seasons, with the first season earning a 97% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and the second earning a 93% rating. The third season, however, was not well received, receiving just a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes following the departure of star Reneé Rapp, who appeared in just one episode of the third season.

Following the third season's flop, the show was canceled in March of 2025.

Duster

Created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, Duster is an American crime thriller series that follows the FBI's first black woman agent as she works to stop a crime syndicate boss with the assistance of a getaway driver.

Despite the high-profile and prestigious creators, the series was officially canceled after one season, with HBO announcing the decision just two months after the show debuted.
