Travis Kelce Retirement Decision Causes a Stir Before Christmas Day Game

0 2

When it was originally announced over the summer, the Christmas Day showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos was expected to be a high-profile AFC West showdown between two playoff contenders. But with the Chiefs now already eliminated from postseason contention, there's another major storyline entering the game, and it has very little to do with the game at hand.

When the season began, many assumed this would be the final season of superstar tight end Travis Kelce's legendary career, given that he flirted with retirement last season and is in the final season of his contract. Kelce now has a decision to make, and that decision will undoubtedly loom large over the Christmas Day showdown.

Travis Kelce Retirement Decision

Following last year's blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl after what was the worst season of his career statistically, Kelce considered retirement but ultimately opted to return to the Chiefs for another season.

In deciding to return for this season, Kelce said he felt “a responsibility in me to play out the contract,” which expires after this season. That, coupled with Kelce's declining on-field performance, his high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift, and a promising career in media or entertainment, has led to a lot of speculation that this could be his final season in the league.

Kelce has acknowledged that a decision is indeed coming, as he made it clear that he intends to make his decision early enough to give the Chiefs plenty of time to plan accordingly.

“Seeing my brother go through it, and seeing how the league works, the season re-starts in April, and I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity, whether I come back or not, and vice versa — whether they want me back or not,” Kelce said last month. “I’d like to make that decision before they’ve got to get draft picks and free agency opens, or gives them an opportunity to fill the roster appropriately. All that will be at the end of the season. I won’t be thinking about it until then.”

Kelce Addresses the Decision

When the Chiefs were officially eliminated from postseason contention earlier this month, the conversation about Kelce's retirement decision suddenly became the most pressing question surrounding the team. Kelce, however, didn't exactly want to talk about it.

Kelce declined to speak to the media following the team's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, which ended their postseason hopes. However, he broke his silence a few days later as he indicated that his focus was on the games remaining on the team's schedule.

“I’d rather keep the focus of the media and everything on this team right now,” Kelce said last week. “All the conversations I have with the team and everything moving forward will be with them. I think it’s a unique time in my life. Unfortunately I’ve got three games left and I know when the season ends this year. Typically we go into it and we don’t know when it’s going to end and that’s the beauty of it. Just trying to make sure that everybody here knows that I’m focused on trying to win football games, these last three games.”

Decision Looms Large

While Kelce has made it pretty clear that he does not want to talk about it, that does not magically make the conversation go away, especially as he prepares for what could be the final home game of his career.

In fact, with the Chiefs already eliminated from playoff contention and the team down to a third-string quarterback, Kelce's upcoming retirement decision is one of the only noteworthy narratives heading into the Christmas Day showdown with the Broncos.

"Tonight could be Travis Kelce’s final home game in Kansas City in what has been a Hall-of-Fame career," NFL insider Adam Schefter wrote in a post on X.

"13 seasons, 9 straight AFC West crowns, 3 Super Bowl titles, Chiefs' all-time TD record holder. Is this Travis Kelce's final career game at Arrowhead?" Yahoo Sports wrote in a post.

"Thursday night could be Travis Kelce's last game in KC," the KC Sports Network wrote in a post.

"While it remains uncertain, there’s a good chance Travis Kelce will be playing his final home game on Christmas night at Arrowhead Stadium," Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated wrote in a Christmas Day feature.

Kelce's teammates and coaches have also spoken about the possibility that this could be his final home game.

"I think his numbers, his personality, and the person speak for themselves," head coach Andy Reid said. "He’s everything you want from a player representing an organization."

"Ah, man, it’s sad," teammate Chris Jones said. "I hope it isn’t his last ride, but if it is, I tip my hat off to him. Hell of a career."

It's not clear what Kelce will ultimately decide to do – his brother does not even seem to know his decision. However, it's all anyone is talking about heading into Thursday night's game.
