Netflix Adding New Music Documentary About Iconic Band in January

0 2

After securing streaming rights, Netflix has now officially set a release date for its upcoming concert documentary on Depeche Mode, the acclaimed English band with over 40 years under its belt.

"Depeche Mode: M" chronicles part of the group's Memento Mori world tour, which spanned 13 months from March 2023 to April 2024. The film focuses on three sold-out shows at Foro Sol in Mexico City in September 2023.

When will 'Depeche Mode: M' debut on Netflix?

According to What's On Netflix's Kasey Moore, the 100-minute long documentary, which is directed by Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frias, will premiere on Netflix on Jan. 9. 2026.

“DEPECHE MODE: M celebrates the band’s global influence while delving into the profound connection between music, mortality, and Mexican tradition — a sacred meeting point where pain, memory, joy, and dance dissolve into one another, blurring into something profoundly and beautifully human," reads the official Netflix synopsis.

"Depeche Mode: M" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival back in June and opened in theaters in the United States and the United Kingdom on Oct. 28.

What is the significance of the Memento Mori tour?

Named after the band's 15th studio album, the Memento Mori tour marked Depeche Mode's first public performances following the death of founding member Andy Fletcher in 2022.

"Melancholy has long been an important part of the Depeche Mode experience, and, other than in their earliest days when Vince Clarke (later of Yazoo) was leading the group with carefree dance songs, they’ve specialized in vulnerability," wrote Rolling Stone's Kory Grow in 2023. "That openness, a sense of surrender, is the essential ingredient to Depeche Mode now....So it’s not surprising that the group, whose two members are now in their 60s, titled the album Memento Mori — a friendly reminder in Latin that you will (nay, must!) die someday — and they picked it while Fletch was still alive."

What songs will be featured in the 'Depeche Mode: M' documentary?

More than two dozen of Depeche Mode's most famous songs are in the project, including "Enjoy the Silence," "Personal Jesus," "Just Can't Get Enough," "Everything Counts," and "I Feel You."

Over 200,000 fans watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees perform over their three nights in Mexico City, with more than three million fans showing up worldwide throughout the entire Memento Mori tour.
