'Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic' May Release Sooner Than Expected

The Game Awards 2025 was full of victories, surprises, laughs, performances, and big reveals. One of the largest ones, and one of the few that seemed to be kept under wraps, was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. The game is a spiritual successor to the classic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was originally developed by Bioware.

The developer of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new studio called Arcanaut Studios. Casey Hudson, who previously directed Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, is returning to direct this new entry.

Unsurprising to many, the game is in early development, according to a post from Star Wars. Many fans and industry analysts initially may have thought that would mean the game would not release until around 2030. However, that is not Hudson's plan.

In a post to X, Hudson stated, "Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030’ rumors. Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”

Hudson seems focused on the project, and fans remain hopeful and excited, as a previously announced remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was announced and then reportedly quietly canceled.

It will, however, likely be a few years before Fate of the Old Republic is released if the game is truly in "early development." It remains to be seen what platforms the game is being developed for, but if the game does indeed release before 2030, it's plausible that it will at least release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The Nintendo Switch 2 just released in June 2025 as well and is seeing strong third-party support, so the game could appear on that platform, too.
