Iconic 90s Disney Villain Set for Live-Action Spin-off

0 4

Disney is responsible for some of the greatest and most beloved animated films of all time. From "Mulan" to "Snow White," each generation has grown up with at least one iconic Disney film that brought together parents and children alike.

1991's "Beauty and the Beast" was one of those films, featuring visuals and music that continue to stand the test of time. The film has been a lasting element in pop culture, and Disney produced a live-action remake in 2017 to great critical and commercial success.

The company is looking to profit from "Beauty and the Beast" once again, and this time the focus will be on the film's unforgettable villain Gaston.

'Beauty and the Beast' Villain Becomes a Star

According to Deadline, a stand-alone Gaston spin-off is in the works at Disney. The film will follow the hunter, presumably before the events of the film. Dave Callaham, who worked on "Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and the most recent "Mortal Kombat" movie, is writing the script for the film.

Michelle Rejwan, who helped produce both "The Force Awakens" and "The Rise of Skywalker" in the "Star Wars" franchise, will also produce this film.

Luke Evans portrayed Gaston in the 2017 live-action remake of "Beauty and the Beast," and there were discussions about a spin-off series with him reprising the role. That idea has been shelved, and the company is prepared to take the character in a different direction.

Early plot details are focusing on a new and original take on the character by a different actor, and that the film will have "swashbuckling" elements. Fans of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series may be interested, as the dormant Disney franchise's last film release came back in May of 2017.

Disney's Latest Live-Action Remake

The Gaston film will follow Disney's recent tradition of live-action remakes involving iconic animated villains. The studio first employed the formula for 2014's "Maleficent" and its sequel, "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil." The Angelina Jolie-led movies were box-office hits, leading to 2021's "Cruella," starring Emma Stone.

Live-action remakes of "Pinocchio," "The Little Mermaid," "Snow White" and "Lilo & Stitch" have followed in recent years, with "Moana" and "Hercules" also set for release in the future.

Disney's previous live-action remakes have usually found success at the box-office, and they've shown the ability to create new and original stories for beloved characters. We'll see if the formula works yet again for the upcoming Gaston movie.
