Beloved 'Pulp Fiction' and 'The Mask' Actor Dead at 60
Peter Greene, the beloved actor known for deftly playing a villain in films such as Pulp Fiction, Training Day, and The Mask, has died. He was 60.
As first reported by The New York Daily News, Greene died on Friday at his New York City apartment. Greene's manager confirmed to the outlet that Greene was found dead inside his Lower East Side apartment, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
According to his IMDB bio, Greene was discovered in his mid-20s in New York. He reportedly trained at Lee Strasberg's studio, which catapulted him to leading roles in Laws of Gravity (1992) and Clean, Shaven (1993).
It's said that the latter was the film that caught Quentin Tarantino's eye, which led to Greene landing the role of sadistic rapist security guard Zed in 1994's Pulp Fiction.
Though Greene perfected the role of a villain, he was also cast in the action comedy The Mask, starring opposite Jim Carey. That 1994 film also introduced Cameron Diaz to the world.
In The Mask, Greene played Dorian Tyrell, a mid-level gangster with sinister motives, like toppling his mafia boss. Tyrell also rains hell on Carey's character Stanley Ipkiss in pursuit of Ipkiss' wooden mask, which ultimately transforms Tyrell into a demonic figure with superpowers.
Greene also appeared alongside Denzel Washington in 2001's Training Day, in which he plays one of the corrupt narcotics officers, Jeff, who is purposely shot twice by Washington's Alonzo Harris during an orchestrated setup that Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) had not signed up for.
Greene also appeared in The Usual Suspects, and he starred opposite Martin Lawrence in the 1999 buddy cop action comedy Blue Streak, in which, yes, Greene played the main villain and Martin's nemesis.
