YouTube TV’s Possible Future Revealed by New Report

For many decades, the television industry was dominated by a handful of companies and it seemed like that was never going to change. Over the last several years, however, the way that many people watch TV shows has changed dramatically, to say the very least.

Given how the entertainment industry has evolved recently, it can be easy to feel like it is virtually impossible to know what will happen in the future. While there certainly is some validity to that, a new report has hinted at what is believed will soon happen to one of the biggest players in the business, YouTube TV.

In December 2025, Yahoo! Finance republished an Omida article that focused on the future of YouTube TV. While Omdia isn't a household name, Business Wire called it a "leading market research firm" in November 2024, so the company's findings can be taken seriously. With that in mind, it is fascinating to know that the company reported that YouTube TV is set to become the top player in the Pay-TV landscape in America.

Based on Omida's market research, the company believes that YouTube TV will become the largest pay-TV service in America. Pay-TV is defined as services that allow customers to pay a subscription fee to be able to view specific channels on an ongoing basis. Omida believes that YouTube TV will become the top company in that space by 2027.

Omida reports that as 2025 is coming to an end, YouTube TV has roughly 9.3 million subscribers, which puts it in third place behind Comcast with 10.6 million and Charter, which has 11.4 million. However, the research firm estimates that by 2027, YouTube TV will take the top spot with 10.4 million subscribers, followed by Charter with 10 million and Comcast with 9.2 million.

In addition to sharing their findings on the future of Pay-TV providers in America, Omida also provided an insight on what YouTube TV's success will mean. As a part of the same article, the Head of Media and Entertainment at Omdia, Maria Rua Aguete, was quoted explaining the future role YouTube TV's ongoing success will afford the service.

"For the first time in US television history, the largest pay-TV operator will be a virtual provider. YouTube TV has evolved into a full pay-TV bundle, integrating linear channels, premium networks, and marquee sports properties such as NFL Sunday Ticket. This is not just another streaming service; it is the new face of US pay TV."

YouTube TV is owned and operated by Alphabet Inc., the company that also serves as Google's parent company. As of the time of this writing, YouTube TV's base plan costs subscribers $82.99 per month and includes over 100 channels and a DVR service. However, major changes to YouTube TV's subscription options are coming soon that will provide users with more bundling and price options.
