'Arctic Blast' Warning Issued Amid Record Cold in Midwest

0 1

A clipper system bring a fresh blast of cold arctic air has temperatures plunging below zero across part of the upper Midwest after the area was hit by record cold just last week.

The first in a series of clipper systems expected to move through the Midwest and Northeast will bring even more cold air and chances of snow throughout the week, according to the Weather Channel.

Midwest Hit by Record Cold Just Last Week

Earlier this week a number of states saw record cold with Aberdeen, South Dakota, tying its daily record low of minus 18 degrees. Just a day later, temperatures dropped below zero across Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin with wind chills in the 20s below zero.

The record cold continued across the Great Lakes and Northeast as temperatures in Flint, MI dropped to minus-3 degrees - breaking a previous daily record of six degrees. Indiana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Vermont also saw records lows in several cities.

'Arctic Blast' Set to Bring More Cold to Midwest, Northeast

After surviving record cold temperatures, the Midwest and Northeast must now brace for an "arctic blast" set to bring low temperatures and a scattering of snowfall.

The Weather Channel revealed the forecast for Sunday: "A shot of cold air that started in parts of Montana, North Dakota and northern Minnesota Saturday will spread to the rest of Minnesota, western Wisconsin and northern Iowa. Here highs could only reach the single digits or the teens."

As the cold front continues to sweep south, cities like Philadelphia, New York and Boston will see their temperatures drop by as much as 10 degrees from Sunday to Monday.

"Their high temperatures may not make it much above freezing Monday or Tuesday afternoon. Breezy conditions along this stretch of I-95 and the coast will make temperatures feel even colder," the Weather Channel said.

Below-freezing temperatures are expected as far south as Baltimore or Washington D.C. as the Weather Channel warns of daily record lows being threatened across much of the Northeast.
