Netflix Applauded for Cancelling 'Horrible' Show Based on Beloved Sitcom

0 2

Netflix has cancelled a controversial show that was based on one of history's most popular sitcoms, and that is making some people on social media very happy.

Social media users referred to the animated series Good Times Black Again as "horrible" and "a mess."

"It got canceled, thank God," wrote a person on X.

The iconic show Good Timeswas on television screens from 1974 through 1979 and made an indelible mark on TV history, featuring the lives of a Black family in Chicago. However, an attempt by Netflix to base an animated sitcom loosely on that show didn't come off as well.

According to ScreenGeek, Netflix has canceled the animated show Good Times Black Again after "backlash" that included claims of racism.

Good Times Black Again was cancelled along with two other adult animated series, What's on Netflix reported on November 21.

The Cancellation of 'Good Times Black Again' Came After Controversy About Alleged 'Unsavory Stereotypes'

According to What's on Netflix, the cancellation of Good Times Black Again was not considered terribly surprising.

That's because the show was criticized by some who suggested it included "unsavory stereotypes or was offensive," although others felt "it was deeply misunderstood."

What's on Netflix described the show as being a "rebooted" version of the iconic series of the same name.

The voice cast included J.B. Smoove, Marsai Martin, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jay Pharoah, according to What's on Netflix, which noted that "the series did spend a few days in the US top 10s as well as a number of other countries."

From January to June 2024, 3.3 million people watched it, and altogether, it was streamed by 5.4 million people, according to What's on Netflix.

The original Good Times created some breakout stars. "TV audiences first saw John Amos on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and later on Maude (as Henry Evans, but still the husband of Florida)," wrote BET.

"But Amos made the biggest impact as television’s first Black TV dad, James Evans. Amos’ tough love, take-no-mess stern portrayal wasn’t relegated to his performance," BET added. However, he was eventually fired from the sitcom in 1976 after criticizing the series' scripts. He later appeared in such films as Let’s Do It Again, Coming to America, Die Hard 2 and Dr. Doolittle 3, per BET. Jimmie Walker and a young Janet Jackson were also among the cast of the original show.

Some social media users unloaded about the show on X. Some applauded the show's cancellation. One fan wrote, "#cancelnetflix, after that horrible Good Times Black Again last year which is on my list of the worst television of the 21st century."

"Finally they canceled that horror show, Good Times Black Again, that doesn't mean I'm going back to Netflix," the fan wrote.

"I'm glad that got canceled by Netflix or whoever decided to pull the plug," wrote one person, calling it the "Good Times mess on Netflix."

But one social media user liked the show, writing, "Good Times cartoon on Netflix is for sure one of my comfort show."

Netflix has two new animated TV series planned, according to What's on Netflix.
