Indiana Police Share Live Video of Massive 45-Car Pileup
A massive 45-car pileup along Indiana's I-70 was caught on video after cars and semi-trucks skidded and slid into each other and off the freeway.
Indiana police shared live video of the crashes from the scene, and drone and other citizen and media videos and photos captured the scope of the pileup.
- "We have 45 vehicles that are involved in this accident," Sgt. Matt Aimes, of the Indiana State Police, said in one of the videos. Aimes said it would take several hours to get the Interstate opened back up (it eventually was). He said in the live video that there were "multiple accidents here behind us. Good thing is, we don't have any major injuries. "
- But he said there were a lot of "slide-offs," and added, "People just need to drive smart." Multiple commercial and passenger vehicles were involved in the pileup, he said. The massive pileup occurred around the 15-mile marker.
Aimes said in the live video that if people "don't have to travel," then they should "stay at home. Number two, if you do have to travel, please reduce your speed and make sure it's for an emergency situation."
Tow companies in West Central Indiana are going to be busy today.

Some pictures sent to me courtesy of Riley FD from the massive pileup on WB I70 in Vigo County.
Here is what I have learned:
-Over 100 cars (heard 160) “involved”.
-45 cars with some notable degree of damage.… pic.twitter.com/WWaw60LdsY
"Make sure you increase your following distance, and make sure you have your headlights activated and make sure you have all the snow off your vehicle at that time," Aimes added.
He said people should use "common sense" in the snowstorm. He said that people should also remember to "buckle up" and reduce their speeds. According to Aimes, troopers were responding to "slide offs" and accidents along I-70.
Aimes also posted a photo from the scene.
Videos at the pileup scene showed at least one person being removed on a stretcher.

A massive multi-vehicle pileup involving around 45 vehicles has shut down I-70 westbound near Terre Haute, just east of the Illinois–Indiana border, as a powerful winter storm slams the region. pic.twitter.com/x0ZtjGJb3K
The pileup wasn't the only problem caused by the bad weather. In Iowa, a Delta plane skidded off a runway, ABC News reported.
The Indiana pileup was caused by the snowfall, police told ABC News, which reported that the pileup closed the Interstate for a time, although police say it's now back open. Travel conditions were dangerous throughout the Midwest due to the blizzard, according to ABC News.
The Massive Winter Storms Are Not Over

The local weather forecast for Indiana, according to AccuWeather, was reporting the following on November 30, "Cloudy, windy and cold; storm total snowfall 2-4 inches."
The bad weather isn't over, although it will move toward the East Coast, AccuWeather reported.
"Cold air settling into the central and eastern US will set the stage for multiple storms this week, bringing snow farther to the south and east with travel disruptions from the Plains to New England."
The site noted, "Cold air will expand and set the stage for snowstorms across the central Plains, Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic and New England beginning early this week."
That came after the massive snowfall in the Midwest also caused more than 15,000 flights to be cancelled and delayed throughout the U.S., with the Chicago, Detroit, Iowa, and Milwaukee airports particularly hard hit. The Chicago O'Hare and Midway airports in particular struggled with cancellations and delayed flights due to the snowfall on the weekend following the Thanksgiving holiday, which is one of the busiest travel days of the year.
