The Viral 'Community Notes' Spree That X Just Unleashed on YouTube
While most of the internet was quiet over the holiday weekend, the users on X (formerly Twitter) were busy engaging in a relentless, one-sided skirmish against YouTube. While the official YouTube X account had been posting once or twice a day, it received a not-so-warm holiday welcome in a viral display of the platform's crowd-sourced fact-checking power. Beginning just before Thanksgiving, users unleashed a community notes spree on YouTube's X account with ruthless efficiency.
Although the "context" warnings began just before the holiday, they continued to pour in on nearly every post into Saturday night, Nov. 29.
'4 out of 5': Inside the Relentless Fact-Checking Barrage on YouTube's X Account
Above is a rundown of just the specific community notes the YouTube official X account was hit with. The stretching has currently included four of their last five posts. Replies to other users also appear to have received community notes.
Considering the context of the community notes, it appears that the recent run of many content creators' channels being banned seemingly out of the blue could be part of the push behind the move. The AI moderation topic surrounding YouTube's removal of channels has been a hot-button issue recently, with many creators taking to social media to voice their frustration and attempt to appeal the deactivation of their accounts.
As the most recent community note read:
"And hope the channel that makes those breakdowns will still be around in the future. YouTube is massively removing channels without adequate explanation thanks to its inefficient AI moderation, and it's extremely difficult to recover once this happens. The situation is critical."

While the primary focus of several community notes was YouTube's decision to ban a significant number of channels, a few other tidbits were mentioned. However, there was a focus on the company's "AI systems," which reportedly have been a factor in many of the decisions leading to creators losing their channels.
Here's a look at a rundown of the topics mentioned throughout the community notes:
- A comment stating YouTube is reportedly rolling out a feature where, if a user pauses a video for 10 seconds, an advertisement begins.
- A Thanksgiving call-out stating YouTube isn't "thankful," citing channels being banned with no opportunity to appeal.
- The same note calls out YouTube, stating they "furthermore lie about the extent of AI involvement" in banning channels.
- A community note saying creators with "one million subscribers [have had] 13-year archives and 40k-sub channels" were wiped out with no human review.
- The most recent community note (referenced above) cites YouTube's removal of channels and calls it "extremely difficult" to recover (seemingly if reinstated).
It'll be interesting to see if the run of community notes on YouTube's X account continues Sunday, Nov. 30, and into the week that follows. Regardless, it appears there's some significant displeasure with the popular streaming site over decisions regarding content creators' channels.
