Target Announces Major Change to Return Policy

Target is one of the nation's most popular retailers year-round, with millions of Americans using the chain to purchase everything from groceries to athletic gear to household items. With the holiday season in full swing, Target is giving customers some extra grace with returning newly-purchased items.

Target recently announced a change to its return policy, implementing an extended return window for the holidays. The change should benefit customers, though it is important to pay attention to the details to see if your products qualify.

Target's normal return policy

Target's usual return policy is pretty easy for shoppers to follow, depending on what they bought.

Typically, Target allows free returns on most new, unopened items within 90 days of purchase, with that window shrinking to 30 days for most items purchased through the “Target Plus” program. The return window for any items bought on Target.com begins as soon as the order is invoiced.

"All items sold by Partners must be returned to Target either in store or by mail," reads the "Target Plus" policy specifically. "Some items sold by a Target Plus Partner have a modified return policy on Target.com."

Target's updated holiday return policy

According to the new extended return rules, customers have extra time to send back items purchased between November 1 and December 24, 2025. The return window begins December 26, 2025.

The policy covers three categories: electronics and entertainment (except for Apple and Beats products), Apple and Beats products and mobile phones and Target Plus items.

• Electronics and Entertainment Items, non-Apple and Beats: Customers have 30 days from December 26 to make a return. Items must be returned by January 24, 2026.
• Apple and Beats products: Customers have 14 days from December 26 to make a return. Returns must be made by January 9, 2026.
• Target Plus: Most Target Plus items will have 30 days from December 26 to return. Items must be returned by January 24, 2026.

Note: Seasonal holiday decor under the Target Plus program is not covered under this new policy.
