College Football Teammates Stabbed, Fellow Player Charged With Attempted Murder
Saturday's college football slate has been marred by a disturbing story out of the UAB program. Two Blazers players were stabbed earlier today, and one of their teammates is now facing charges, including attempted murder.
Two UAB players were injured by their teammate, according to David Ubben of The Athletic. Ubben's report came after AL.com previously said multiple people were stabbed at the UAB football facility this morning, with two victims transported to the hospital.
Additionally, Ubben writes that UAB offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was booked into Jefferson County Jail this afternoon and charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder.
UAB confirms 'assault,' investigation
Shortly after news of this disturbing incident broke, UAB acknowledged that an assault had taken place, adding that the suspect was in custody and "no threat" to anyone else on campus.
“UAB Police and Public Safety is investigating an assault that took place this morning at the Football Operations Center. Injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The suspect is in custody, and there is no threat to campus,” the university confirmed in a statement.
In a separate statement later on, UAB added that the two unnamed players were in stable condition and confirmed that another player was responsible for the attack.
“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition,” the university said in an updated statement. “Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody and an investigation is taking place.
“The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
Details remain scarce
As of now, the two players who were stabbed have not been identified, and it's unclear what provoked Mincey's assault. The stabbing took place shortly after 10 a.m., per WVTM-13.
In the meantime, UAB, which is 3-7 on the season, is playing USF as scheduled. The Blazers trail the Bulls 7-3 in the first quarter.
Even before today's shocking event, it had been a tumultuous season for UAB, which fired head coach Trent Dilfer on Oct. 12 after two-plus seasons in charge.
More on Daniel Mincey
A redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, the 6-foot-4, 310-pound Mincey has not appeared in any games this fall. He transferred to UAB from the University of Kentucky, where he played in one game, against Southern Mississippi, in 2024.
Mincey entered the NCAA transfer portal in April, before announcing his commitment to UAB the following month.
