Paramount Finally Makes a Decision About the Next Star Trek Movie
The future of the Final Frontier suddenly has a very new and bold direction. After nine years of false starts and broken promises, it seems that Paramount Pictures has finally settled on a new creative team and specific direction for the next Star Trek feature film. According to a new report from Deadline, which broke on November 14, 2025, the screenwriters and directing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will helm a brand new take on Star Trek, which will leave all the previous TV series and films behind.
"The duo are coming on to write, produce, and are attached to direct a new original Star Trek film for Paramount," the report stated, adding that "Goldstein and Daley’s film is a completely new take on the Star Trek universe and not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects."
For longtime fans, or even newer fans, this means that the next Star Trek film will not be a sequel to 2016's Star Trek Beyond, the third film starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, following the successful J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot in 2009. It also means that the new film will likely not directly tie into the various newer streaming Star Trek shows—like Discovery, Picard, or Strange New Worlds—which, starting in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, have been reliable hits for Paramount+, a stalwart streamer, originally launched as CBS All Access.
But who are Goldstein and Daley? Well, speaking of Chris Pine, these are the guys who brought us the 2023 smash-hit Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, as well as Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. Both also did uncredited writing on 2025's A Minecraft Movie.
In short, Goldstein and Daley know how to balance action, humor, and big franchise expectations exceptionally well. This newest announcement comes after years of various Star Trek movies being announced, and then fading away, including an unrealized film from Noah Hawley, a story that would have brought back Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk's father, and most recently, a so-called origin story directed by Andor director Toby Haynes.
But now, with the recent Skydance and Paramount merger seemingly complete, it appears that there is a fresh new direction for the Star Trek franchise that might not require any homework at all. Will it work? Well, as Spock said in The Wrath of Khan, "there are always possibilities..."
