At this point, I’m probably the resident budget shoe lover at Men’s Journal. So, with Walmart’s early Black Friday sale now in session through Nov. 16, I had to take a peek and see what I would buy for under $50. This shoe has a thick midsole and breathable upper above a pocked, crater-like outsole that should provide solid traction. The design, and especially in the navy blue colorway, is sporty, though this is certainly a casual walking and chore shoe more so than a fashion statement.

More to the point, I feel like it's important to have two pairs of everyday chore shoes. The first should be a low-to-the-ground, everyday workhorse with stability; something that can withstand hundreds of miles of walking.
The second should be a thick-midsole shoe that gets decent traction and keeps you above the ground enough to keep sand, wet roads, and cut grass out of the way. This, like the Asics Gel-Excite 2 that I’m currently using for this purpose, is a perfect example of that second kind of shoe.
The combination of a great outsole and thick midsole really works for casual, practical wear like this.
