MCU Star Joins the Cast of 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie'
A follow-up to the Super Mario Bros. Movie has been confirmed for a while now, but details were scarce until we finally got a full trailer for the film. A lot of new information has been revealed, including the confirmation of two fan-favorite characters and their respective actors.
During the November 12 Nintendo Direct presentation, which focused exclusively on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a new trailer was debuted, confirming Rosalina and Bowser Jr. for the film. This sequel film is loosely based on the events and premise of the Super Mario Galaxy video game duology, which was originally released for the Nintendo Wii and has recently been re-released for the Nintendo Switch.
Academy Award winner Brie Larson, who also plays Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will be playing Rosalina in the film. Larson has been described as a "Nintendo super fan" by Chris Meledandri, producer of the film.
Bowser Jr. is set to take the main antagonist role over from his father, Bowser. Bowser Jr. will be played by Bennie Safdie, best known for his roles in Oppenheimer and Happy Gilmore 2. Jack Black will also be returning as Bowser, with Chris Pratt reprising his role as the iconic red plumber.
In what may be a surprise to many, fan-favorite Yoshi has not been confirmed for the film, despite having a major role in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 video game. If Yoshi is in the film, it now seems likely it will be kept a secret until the film's release.
TheSuper Mario Bros. Movie broke several box office records upon its release and remains the highest-grossing video game adaptation to date, collecting an estimated $1.3 billion, along with being one of the highest-grossing animated films ever made.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release on April 3, 2026.
