'Game of Thrones' Star Sets Unofficial World Record With Impressive Single-Arm Bag Over
Icelandic strongman Hafthor "Thor" Bjornsson has broken yet another world record—unofficially. If you’re not familiar with strongmen, you may also know Bjornsson as "The Mountain" from Game of Thrones. He’s had an incredible 2025, crushing goals and adding more accolades to his already impressive athletic resume, but he’s always looking to push his limits. Recently, Bjornsson shared that he broke the unofficial world record for the single-arm bag over, an event rooted in the ancient Scottish Highland games.
Just a few months ago, Bjornsson was crowned Iceland’s Strongest Man for the 12th time. A month later, he beat his own previous deadlift record, lifting 1,124 pounds and claiming a new world record for the heaviest deadlift of all time. In 2018, he was crowned World’s Strongest Man and holds three Arnold Strongman Classic titles from 2018 to 2020.

The single-arm bag over is simple in theory, but brutally challenging in practice. Competitors grip a heavy sandbag between their legs, swing it for momentum, and then launch it over a high bar using only one arm. The goal is to clear the bar without touching it.
In a recent social media clip, Bjornsson grabbed a 24-kilogram bag with his left arm and completed a couple of practice swings before flinging it over his shoulder. The bag sailed comfortably over a 16-foot-high bar.
"No body has ever done this. 24kg bag over 16’, 4 meters out. Unofficial World Record!" he wrote on Instagram.
Arguably one of the strongest men in the world, Bjornsson has made a habit of surpassing his own records. So for now, it’s unofficial, but with his track record, we’ll be waiting to see him make it official.
