Farmer's Almanac Projects Thanksgiving Snow For Some Parts of U.S.

0 23

Thanksgiving is just over three weeks away, and some areas of the United States may have early snowfall to mark the occasion.

Each year, Thanksgiving week is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods in the United States. Throughout the country, millions of people are on the move visiting friends and relatives for the holiday.

Bad weather can complicate anyone's travel plans, so it's important to pay attention to the forecast as Turkey Day draws closer. According to the most updated projections from The Old Farmer's Almanac, snow may be part of the equation for some parts of the country.

"Snow is limited to a few northern spots—northern New England, the Upper Midwest, the higher elevations in the Intermountain West, and Alaska—where flurries could affect travel," the almanac said.

Overall, much of the East will experience sunshine, with possible rainy conditions in the West.

A closer look at possible Thanksgiving snow

The map from The Old Farmer's Almanac shows states like Vermont and Maine possibly being in line for snow around Thanksgiving, while more southern parts of New England down through the Mid-Atlantic should be spared.

In the Upper Midwest, "occasional snow flurries" have the potential to "slick up roads and cut visibility," while the Intermountain Region will see temperatures drop the week of Thanksgiving with rain and snow expected.

"While conditions vary by elevation, travelers should anticipate occasional disruptions—especially in mountain passes and higher terrain," the almanac says.

Lastly, Alaska will face snow showers on and off all week, which shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone.

Snowy winter ahead?

In terms of a full winter forecast, obviously things can change, but back in August, the 209th edition of the Farmers' Almanac (which is a different publication than The Old Farmer's Almanac) predicted a “wild ride” including “dramatic swings and widespread wintry weather.”

The coldest temperatures will be found from the Northern Plains to New England, with New England possibly seeing "frequent" snow.

“Areas up and down the Atlantic Coast will see significant rain, mixing with snow from time to time,” the forecast reads. “The Mid-Atlantic region is forecast to see some decent snow, especially for areas in the mountains.”

Elsewhere, the Midwest, the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and North Central states are staring down a “classic winter wonderland," while the mountains of the Pacific Northwest could also see "impressive snowfall totals.”
