Ford Has A New Truck With A Mustang Heart, And You Can Get One Next Year

0 2

Ford already offers a tricked-out, street-truck-style take on its popular Maverick compact. The Maverick Lobo looks the part, but it fell a little flat on the go-fast part of the sport truck equation. Hopefully, a new engine done up with help from the Ford Mustang will help assuage those concerns. The Ford Maverick 300T uses the 'Stang's turbocharger to further push the small truck's performance potential, and offers even more go-fast parts to boot.

The kit will be sold to consumers later, but this version was shown at this year's SEMA show first. Ford says the idea spawned from owners, likely not satiated with the somewhat tepid Lobo, who said they wanted more performance. The truck uses an upgraded 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, now fitted with the larger turbocharger from the Mustang’s 2.3-liter motor. Output is a healthy 300 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. That's quite a bit more than the Lobo, which didn't get any power increase over the truck's base 238 hp.

Ford also fitted some suspension tweaks to make the truck drive like a sports car, too. These include a revised take on the Lobo's suspension with lowering springs, monotube rear dampers, and a fatter rear sway bar. All in all, it's a much more thorough take on a quick truck.

A few visual enhancements will ensure the truck stands out from the rest of the Maverick lineup, including a lower ride height and a Borla Sport cat-back exhaust with dual tailpipes. The 20-inch wheels are courtesy of the Mustang Mach-E GT and can be had in black or bronze. There's also some sporty Pirelli P Zero Elect tires and a reworked front end. There are aesthetic changes like new Ford Performance badges and 300T graphics on the truck, as well as some unique floor mats inside.

Ford is mum on pricing right now, but did say the kit would be available to order with XL, XLT, and Lariat trims equipped with the 2.0-liter engine and AWD. You should also opt for the 4K Tow Package, which enhances transmission and drivetrain cooling. Sadly, it doesn't seem a manual is in the cards for the moment, which means the truck's lackluster automatic will handle shifting. However, Ford did say the custom truck was "just the beginning."
