Publix Recalls Ice Cream Flavor in Six States
Publix Super Markets has announced a recall of one lot of its Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream due to allergy concerns.
On Tuesday, Publix initiated the recall in six of the eight states where the franchise is located: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, except for Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa and Sarasota.
Publix is also found in Virginia and North Carolina but those two states are not impacted by the recall, which was confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday.
What to know
The cause of the recall, per Publix, is that its Rich & Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream half gallon container with a sell-by date of “June 19, 2026 A” may actually contain Publix Rich & Creamy French Vanilla Ice Cream with a French Vanilla lid.
That ice cream contains eggs, which can cause a "serious or life-threatening reaction" in individuals who are allergic. Eggs are one of the most common allergy-causing foods in children, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Mild allergic reactions to eggs may include hives, skin rashes, stomach discomfort and vomiting.
Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported as of today.
What to do
If you have purchased one of these containers of ice cream in the six states listed above, you can return to the product to your local Publix for a refund.
“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves,” said Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous. “To date, there have been no reported cases of illness. Consumers who have purchased the product in question may return the product to their local store for a full refund. Publix customers with additional questions may call our customer care department toll-free at 1-800-242-1227 or visit our website at publix.com.”
