Doritos Gives Their Most Iconic Snack a Dye-Free Makeover
In an effort to improve the nation’s health, government officials have been encouraging food manufacturers to remove dyes and artificial ingredients from their products. As part of the push, companies like Tyson Foods and Walmart have announced they are removing certain controversial ingredients, such as high-fructose corn syrup, from many of their flagship and store brands.
Frito-Lay is another company that recently launched a line of snacks free of artificial dyes and flavors. The new line is called Simply NKD, with the NKD title referring to “naked” of dyes, and it includes the original, iconic flavors of Doritos and Cheetos.
The new Simply NKD Doritos Nacho Cheese will not contain Red 40, Yellow 5 or Yellow 6 and the Simply NKD Cheetos Crunchy Cheese will not contain Yellow 6. It appears the Simply NKD snacks will be available at Sam’s Club and through Instacart, and it has not been stated whether they will be available at other retailers.
The imagery for the new snacks has been spotted on Instacart and other social media posts, but shoppers haven’t seen them in stores yet. The full ingredient list is also not available at this time, and we’re curious to see how it compares to their original counterparts, aside from the removal of the dyes as mentioned earlier.
Frito-Lay Launches New ‘Simply NKD’ Line of Doritos and Cheetos
Frito-Lay also has a line of Simply snacks made with whole-grain ingredients and no artificial colors or flavors, and fans have been speculating on the differences between this line and the new Simply NKD options. It appears the difference is that the Simply NKD Doritos are their classic Nacho Cheese flavor, while the Simply line offers Doritos only in White Cheddar and Cool Ranch, not Nacho Cheese.
Simply Cheetos are available in Crunchy White Cheddar and Puffs White Cheddar, but the new Simply NKD Cheetos will be the original Crunchy Cheese flavor.
Health-conscious fans seem to be stoked for the new Simply NKD line. “Ohhh yay! I hope they do this with cool ranch as well without changing the flavor. They are the one thing we haven’t been able to go dye-free with because they are my daughters favorite but she won’t eat the Simply ones,” stated one person in a Facebook post.
“Really looking forward to these,” said one fan. “If I can get some flammin hot fries NKD that’d be nice”, exclaimed another person. “Wow! Everything should go to this!!” noted another shopper.
It’s unclear when the new Simply NKD Doritos and Cheetos will drop, but we’ll be keeping our eye out for them, that’s for sure.
