Marlon Wayans Takes Aim at ‘Demon Slayer’ After 'Him' Box Office Loss
Better known for his comedy hits, Marlon Wayans's Him was on track to be a psychological horror success. The movie was anything but when it was released on September 19, with Wayans having a few choice words for its competitor, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.
During an interview with ShxtsnGigs Podcast, Wayans didn't hold back on how the anime megahit dominated the box office within a few short days of its release.
"Can I say it? F*** anime! We came at number two! Him first! F*** anime! I was up against it, Him came out that same week against whatever it was… Demon Slayer! I want to wax your beard off your face!" he said.
Him received generally negative reviews, having only made over $13 million during its debut between first-day viewing and Thursday night previews. In total, the movie only grossed $25.2 million compared to its $27 million budget.
In return, Demon Slayer landed a home run, having made $70 million within its first few days, setting the record for the biggest opening weekend for an international movie in the U.S. Against its $20 million budget, Demon Slayer made an astounding $633 million during its theatrical run.
Wayans's Him landed a 31% Rotten Tomatoes score with only a 5.1 rating on IMDb, with Demon Slayer getting an 8.5 from IMDb. The anime also received a 4.7 rating from Crunchyroll.
In response to Wayans's comment, fans couldn't help but laugh at the comparison between the two movies. Even the interview hosts made clear that Him and Demon Slayer are very different genres of movies with different fanbases.
"I feel bad for whatever movies come out the week of the final Demon Slayer movie cause it’s going to pass even more records," said one fan.
Another commented, "Lmao, ain’t nobody going to the movies like.. 'what should we watch Demon Slayer or HIM?'"
Wayans' next project after Him is the return of the Scary Movie franchise with Scary Movie 6.
