George Clooney Details Past Drug Use and the Night He Got Ridiculously Drunk After the Tonys
George Clooney has been Hollywood's heartthrob for years since his start as an actor, but he now looks back on his life — especially his past with drugs and alcohol. The Ocean's Eleven actor also details how he got "high school" drunk at the Tonys.
In an interview with Esquire, Clooney opens up about his drunken night a the 2025 Tony Awards. He has made his Broadway debut for Good Night, and Good Luck, which earned him a nomination, but had ultimately lost to Oh, Mary!’s Cole Escola.
As a result, Clooney decided to have a night out on the town, especially since he had stayed off alcohol for the play, as it affects your voice and sleep. He explains, "I got blasted. Barely-walking drunk, you know?"
The Jay Kelly actor goes on to describe how he got "dumbass drunk," went home with his wife, Amal Clooney, and laid in bed laughing.
"We’re lying in bed, and I go, Well, I caught up for all my abstinence in one night. I was sick all day the next day; it was hysterical," he said.
Clooney also revealed that his relationship with alcohol has had its moments in the past, but never been cause for concern.
"I’ve had periods where, I wouldn’t say it was a problem — I never woke up and drunk or anything,” said the actor. “But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night," said the actor.
Along with his drunken Tonys night, Clooney had no issue opening up about his bad drug use during earlier years of his career in the 80s.
"Eighty-two, I tried — I did blow and stuff. I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all," revealed Clooney.
To detail the experience, he uses the 1978 series Taxi and the one episode where the characters are doing a lot of cocaine.
"At the time, it was like, No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive. But then it was like, Oh, well, it’s actually pretty f------- bad. Plus, it was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a s---," Clooney added.
