Brock Purdy Reveals Christian McCaffrey & Nick Bosa’s Wild Pregame Rituals [Exclusive]

Brock Purdy has been with the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the 2022 NFL draft, so he’s seen his fair share of unique moments with the franchise, both on and off the field. Purdy, who was selected with the last pick in the draft, a spot that is dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant,” has quickly shed that label thanks to his play since becoming the team’s starting quarterback.

Purdy recently sat down with Men’s Journal to discuss football, family and his love of one of the cleanest sports drinks on the market, Recover 180. During the conversation, I asked the 25-year-old for a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at pregame rituals, and they didn’t disappoint.

After discussing Purdy’s own pregame approach, I asked him about the craziest or most unique rituals among his 49ers teammates. He pointed to two names specifically, running back Christian McCaffrey and defensive end Nick Bosa, for very different reasons.

“I would say, just off the top of my head...Christian McCaffrey’s routine is on another level,” Purdy told Men’s Journal. “He’s done it since day one, but you can tell he does everything to a T, the same. Coming in from warmups, he gets on his knees, puts his headphones in, towel over his head, says a little prayer and then gets ready. But I can see it, it happens every single day, so that’s pretty funny.”

While it appears McCaffrey is a big fan of consistency in his routine, Purdy then explained Bosa’s “gross” pregame ritual.

“I know [Nick] Bosa wears the same cut-off to the warm-up out on the field,” Purdy explained. “And it’s gross, this thing is like—I know it gets washed, but he just needs a new one. He’s another guy that wears the same one; a lot of guys have their routines, but I think it makes it fun.”

Wearing the same exact cut-off before every game is pretty wild, but it’s good to hear that Bosa does wash it. I’d be willing to bet there are a few athletes out there who have a similar pregame approach, but it may not include tossing the clothing in the wash very often, or at all.

Purdy, who missed Weeks 2 and 3 to start the 2025 NFL season with a toe injury, is back in action for Week 4. Unfortunately, the 49ers lost Bosa for the season due to a torn ACL, which occurred in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy first helped lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship in 2022 following the team’s stellar 13-4 regular-season record, which included his own 5-0 record after becoming the starter. That was followed up by a 12-5 record for the 49ers in 2023, a season that ended with a tough 25-22 Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, he and the 49ers are looking to make another deep playoff run, and if they do, Purdy will be a big part of why.
