First On-Set Photo From Ryan Gosling's 'Star Wars' Movie Hints at a Wild Destination
It's a trap! Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy has shared an on-set photo of Ryan Gosling and a young actor, Flynn Gray, floating on some kind of vehicle, "somewhere in the Mediterranean sea." Beyond the official filming and cast announcement from Lucasfilm on August 28, this represents the first real production update on a Starfighter since the film was first confirmed at Star Wars Celebration in Japan on April 17.
Levy's new Instagram post shows Gosling and Gray adrift on the water. Is this an unlikely location for a movie supposedly set in space? Maybe. Maybe not. In fact, it's possible that Levy is hinting that at least one location in Starfighter will be some kind of water planet.
The case for a famous ocean planet in Star Wars: Starfighter
The Star Wars franchise is famous (or infamous) for single-biome planets. The first 1977 film gave us the desert planet of Tatooine. The Empire Strikes Back began on the ice world of Hoth. In Revenge of the Sith, Mustafar is even described as a "volcanic planet," and in Return of the Jedi, Endor is a "forest moon."
So, the idea of ocean planets (or watery moons) is very much a thing Star Wars could, and has done before. The question is, do we already know what ocean planet this might be?

Is Starfigther revealing a famous Star Wars planet?
While Season 2 of The Mandalorian gave us the watery planet Trask, and the 2019 movie The Rise of Skywalker had Kylo Ren and Rey fight on an ocean moon of Endor, the aquatic planet of Mon Cala, home to Admiral Ackbar, has never been seen in a live-action Star Wars movie.
Could Gosling and Gray be going for a swim with the fish aliens known as the Mon Calamari? It's a long shot, but if so, it would mean somebody, preferably Gosling, has to say "It's a trap!"
Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters on May 28, 2027.
