Swiss Plane Aborts Takeoff After Engine Catches Fire at Boston Logan Airport

0 11

A Swiss International Airlines plane was forced to change its flight plan as they were headed to Zurich, Switzerland, from Boston Logan International Airport. On Tuesday, September 16, Flight55 was attempting to take off when flames erupted from the right engine.

"The crew immediately aborted the takeoff," said an airline rep to People. All 223 passengers and 13 crew members deplaned the flight without incident or injury after it taxied back to the gate.

In footage posted by 7NEWS Australia, the plane can be seen on the runway before smoke and flames burst from the engine. The plane started to skid and slowed to a full stop before airline staff approached to assess the situation.

"We're about halfway down the runway when all of a sudden, there's kind of a boom noise and a big jolt, so the plane jolts forward," passenger Molly Furrer told NBC10 Boston. "I could feel the plane braking and then started to skid down the runway until it came to a complete stop," said one passenger to NBC10 Boston.

"..The captain came on and told us that there was an engine warning for the second engine and that they had to turn off the engine quickly during takeoff," she added.

According to the spokesperson, an FAA investigation is underway into what happened. After the incident, takeoffs on the runway were paused, and the aircraft was removed.

A statement from Swiss International Air Lines explains that the passengers were onboarded onto another flight that would arrive in Zurich on Wednesday, September 17. The plane used was already at the airport for maintenance and was cleared to return to Zurich without passengers. Due to the situation, the plane onboarded the passenger from LX55.
