Kroger Officially Begins Closing 60 Locations
Kroger is a popular grocery store, and Americans flock to it to get their groceries and other goods. The grocery chain got its start in 1883, so the brand has been helping people do their grocery shopping for more than a century. Kroger has around 2,800 stores in 35 states and annual sales of more than $132.5 billion, according to the company, and it's actually one of the world's largest retailers.
So, knowing that Kroger is a place that Americans have come to rely on to get their necessities, it's disheartening to hear that they're closing some stores. But, it's a reality, and each year, retailers tend to either open or close stores, based on their growth and local and regional trends.
Back in June, Kroger announced that said the company would close 60 locations in the U.S. over the next 18 months, and the news came as part of their first quarter 2025 sales report. During a conference call, interim CEO Ron Sargent said they were closing stores that were unprofitable. Closing 60 stores means around a 2 percent deduction in locations.
These Kroger Stores Are Apparently Closing
So, where is Kroger closing stores in September and October? According to a report from the United Food & Commercial Workers, a labor union that represents about 1.3 million retail, meatpacking and food processing workers in the United States and Canada, three stores are closing in September and one is on target to close in October. It's worth noting that Kroger hasn't confirmed these closings yet, so this is a report.
In Georgia, the store closing in September is the location at 3479 Memorial Drive in Decatur, which is closing Sept. 12, according to Atlanta News First. In Tennessee, it's the store at 1664 East Done Drive in Kingsport, which is closing Sept. 19, according to UFCW Local 400. Finally, in Virginia, the location closing in September is at 466 South Cummings Street, Abingdon, closing Sept. 19 per UFCW Local 400.
One more Kroger store is expected to close in October, and that's at 3855 Buford Highway in Brookhaven, which is closing Oct. 17 according to Atlanta News First.
So, those Kroger stores are apparently going to shut their doors very soon. Let's hope some new ones take their place to serve those local communities.
