HBO’s 'The Penguin' Season 2 Gets Major Update, Outlook Linked to 'The Batman Part II'

HBO’s The Penguin series, led by Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, received a noteworthy Season 2 update. However, its outlook and potential likelihood appear to be on the back burner as DC prepares for Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. While we know the sequel to the Robert Pattinson-led The Batman is a full-go, the award-winning spin-off show was addressed by Casey Bloys, the CEO of HBO.

As popular as the debut season of The Penguin was, Bloys’ comments didn’t signal there was an immediate plan in place. If anything, it sounds as though Reeves and showrunner Lauren LeFranc may need to put their heads together before sequel talk ramps up.

While speaking with Variety, Bloys opened up about several of HBO’s popular shows. Regarding The Penguin, the CEO said that they’re “kicking around ideas,” and pointed to The Batman Part II needing to “get going,” which won’t begin filming until spring of 2026.

“They’re kicking around ideas,” Bloys said. “Obviously, Matt’s got to get the [next The Batman] movie going. That is underway, I believe. So I think he and Lauren [LeFranc] are talking about ideas. So I’m hopeful that there will be another story to tell.”

Although it’s far from the overwhelmingly positive response fans of the hit show would have liked, it sounds as though The Penguin may just need to come along slowly, considering the busy slate of movies and shows DC Studios is gearing up to launch. Or at the very least, let’s hope that’s the case, as fans would love to see Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo and the rest of the cast back for an encore performance.

‘The Penguin’ Green-Lighting Season 2 Would Make Sense, and Critics Agree

As much as fans offered overwhelmingly positive reviews for The Penguin, critics echoed the sentiment and then some. The two sides easily agreed on the popular review site Rotten Tomatoes, leading to the Farrell-led show pulling in a stellar 95 percent critics’ rating based on 211 reviews.

Fans racked up north of 2,500 verified reviews on the site, culminating in an average score of 85 percent. As impressive as Farrell’s performance was, Milioti walked away as the big winner at the 2025 Emmy Awards. The actress who stars as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, which was announced on Sunday, Sept. 14.
