ITV with River Mutton before the Devils Race
Only three days before the Extreme World Championships at the Devils Race in the Czech Republic, we checked in with River Mutton, the defending World Champion. The 23-year-old from New Zealand has been ripping it this season with second-place finishes at both the King of the Alps and Veko. Racing in Lipno for the first time, she is excited to learn some new lines there.
Kayak Session: Hey River, how are you doing? You’re coming into the Devils Race as the reigning World Champion. How are you feeling just a couple of days out?
River Mutton: Currently I’m chillin’, enjoying being back, eating European food, and feeling excited for some racing! Obviously I’m here hoping to defend my title, but I’m mostly just stoked to go have some fun in my kayak.
KS: Have you been to the Devils Race before?
RM: I’ve never been to Devils Race before, so I’m not too sure what to expect. I’m looking forward to learning some new race lines!
KS: You’ve been doing loads recently: we saw you at the King of the Alps, at Veko, and sending it in Norway. How do you combine it all? Was training an important part of your routine in the last weeks?
RM: I’ve been super lucky to be able to go to a bunch of places already this year! I don’t know what I’m doing half the time honestly, but it’s been working out sweet. For sure training has been a priority recently leading up to the race, mostly speed-focused flat water so I don’t get too whipped by the slalom paddlers there.
KS: Best of luck this weekend! We’ll be watching you on the livestream. Are you excited to catch up with everyone outside paddling?
RM: Thank you! I’m super excited to see a bunch of people. It’s always so fun having friends from all over in one place!
