220km of the Ikopa River | Madagascar
Flowing from the capital city of Antananarivo, the Ikopa River is one of Madagascar’s major waterways. While some portions had reportedly been paddled further downstream, it appeared—based on satellite imagery and limited local information—that no one had attempted the full 220km stretch of whitewater that caught the team’s attention.
After a warm-up session on the put-in rapids, Dane Jackson and crew packed their gear and set off for what was expected to be a 6–7 day expedition through this untapped section of river. What unfolded was a true adventure: unpredictable flash floods, the discovery that crocodiles inhabited parts of the route, and the challenges of navigating an incredibly wide and varied river system.
