What to Wear for Outdoor Paddling

Tips for Staying Warm and Comfortable

As we get back out onto the water for our outdoor paddling sessions, it’s important to dress appropriately for the conditions – especially in the UK Spring. Here are some tips and suggestions to help you stay warm, comfortable, and able to enjoy your time on the water.

1. Start with a good base layer
A warm base layer makes all the difference. Ideally, opt for thermal tops and leggings – these don’t have to be expensive and can also be used for other activities like walking, football, or rugby.

If you don’t have thermals or aren’t looking to invest right away, jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt will do just fine. Avoid jeans or anything that holds water.

2. Consider some optional extras
While not essential, a few extras can really improve your paddling experience:

  • Baggie Shorts
Wearing a pair of shorts over your thermal bottoms can provide a bit more comfort and warmth. Any loose-fitting (non-cotton) sports shorts will do the job.

  • Wetsuit Shorts
A favourite choice among club paddlers, wetsuit shorts help keep your bum warm (though not dry!). They’re comfy and practical, and perfect for our type of sessions.

  • Wetsuit Boots
While we do have a decent selection available at the club, having your own pair of wetsuit boots is a worthwhile investment. They’re not expensive and do wonders for keeping your feet warm during colder sessions.

Where to Buy Kit
Our local paddlesport provider, Wet & Wild, stocks a great range of paddlesports kit – including thermals – and is well worth a look if you’re considering investing in some proper gear.

Selling or Swapping Kit
If you’ve got old or unused paddling gear gathering dust, why not pass it on? Members are welcome to sell or swap equipment using the noticeboard in the Club House or via the Kingston Kayak Club Facebook Group.
