Trifecta on to Start the Labor Day Weekend on SD Bay

Happy Friday Fishing Family,

Fun and interesting day out on Sand Diego Bay today. Launched from the Shelter Island launch ramp around 0645. There was a long line of boaters getting set to race out and catch their first fish. Overcast day with a light breeze. Water felt warm. Trolled out toward the SI pier. Observed lots of schools of baitfish and unfortunately no bites on the troll. Tide was moving in fairly swift but manageable. Caught several sandies off Shelter Island by the pier. Big one was approximately 18 inches the smallest was about 10 inches. Also caught a 14 inch halibut in the same area.

Decided to make my may across to the north Island side near the shoal markers. Had a good time here. Casted several times before getting my first good bite and unfortunately I missed. Casted again and within seconds got a bite and hooked into a Cuda. Stayed in that area and caught a little spottie and a little sandie. Wind picked up at about 0930 with an occasional gust that almost made a few white caps. Was about to leave because the wind was pushing me and the current was going the other way. Had to stay because I then hooked a 20 inch Halibut followed by a baby calico. Caught another calico which measured 13 inches. It was a good way to end the day.

Final Count - 5 Sandies, 2 Calies, 2 Spotties, 2 Halies, 1 Cuda.

I used ghost shrimp, green, and smoke plastics. All three worked well for me. Would suggest casting, letting it drop to the bottom and let it bounce the bottom as you move or as the current takes it. Just a suggestion.

May the fish gods be good to you all.
