VARGAS ISLAND AREA OPEN FOR KAYAKING

The Ahousaht have opened up part of the traditional territories for kayaking and camping for 2021.

There are still some areas that remain closed or just for day use so please review the map of the area. Vargas 2021 Kayak Map

The Ahousaht Guardian program is asking $15per night fee/per person to enter into their territory. MHSS Notice to Sea Kayakers

“What we want to do, is create a stream of funds that can be put back into the community as a whole. From fisheries restoration projects, camp sites and platforms, boardwalks, increased research on behalf of the guardian program in various areas. I think this is a great opportunity for the tourism industry who benefit significantly off the Ahousaht Hahoulthee to give back directly to the community. As well this is a voluntary fee, but most people are more than willing to give towards projects like this if rationalized to them. It has worked in many different areas, but it takes a community to achieve it.”

This permit can be picked up at  Lone Cone Campground office in Tofino (368 Main St) at The Shore building down on the pier or at the Kayak Store with your rental.
