“The Sunshine of the Night”

0 3

Many years ago my uncle gifted to me a homemade grey box that contained an old red naphtha Coleman lantern. This box has sat undisturbed since I got it all those years ago. I recently came across it in my storage shed and decided to check out the old lantern. With a little research on the web I was able to learn that it is a Canadian model 200A and the date of manufacture on this lantern is 04/63. It

The lantern is in pretty good shape for its age, it needed a quick clean up, pump lube, and a new mantle installed. Although Canadian made, the glass globe is stamped “Made in USA”, perhaps the origianl had been broken and replaced. There was even a some fuel still in the tank. Although skeptical I pumped it up and decided to try lighting the old lantern. Success, it took a few minutes to sputter and flame before the familiar chug typical of most Coleman stoves and lanterns greeted my ears. This thing really puts out some light and loads of heat.

Stamped into the side of the fuel tank is “The Sunshine of the Night”. It does not disappoint with its beautiful warm light. I am going to put this lantern to use on our future adventures. Amazing how the build/quality of these old products holds up.
