‘Give him boxing gloves…’:Sachin Tendulkar gives BLUNT remark on umpire Steve Bucknor

New Delhi: Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar recalled his on-field battles with Australia’s Glenn McGrath and the late spin master Shane Warne. He also made a humorous comment about former international umpire Steve Bucknor, who made a number of controversial calls against him during his playing career.

During an “Ask me anything’ session on Reddit, Sachin answered fascinating questions related to his playing days.

When questioned whether he had ever intentionally played a false shot to disrupt a bowler’s rhythm or gauge his reaction, Sachin said, “Yes, on many occasions I have played risky shots to break bowler’s rhythm. The one that comes to my mind is against McGrath at Nairobi in 2000″

He was referring to the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy quarterfinal clash with Australia, where McGrath, who was wicketless, attempted to dominate the opening pair of Sachin and Sourav Ganguly. Sachin counterattacked, hitting him for three sixes and two fours in his 38 off 37 balls, which included three boundaries.

India scored 265/9 thanks to his quick 66-run opening partnership with Ganguly, which set the stage for debutant Yuvraj Singh’s game-winning 84. McGrath conceded 61 runs in nine overs and was left without a wicket.

Australia were all out for 245, and India advanced to the semifinals before falling to New Zealand in the final, where Chris Cairns played a match-winning knock.

Sachin recalled his intense on-field battle with Shane Warne

Sachin also recalled his intense battles with Warne, which is one of cricket’s most talked-about rivalries. When asked about who advised him to play sweep shots against Warne, Sachin said, “No, one, I did it myself. I had a different stance for him when he bowled over the wicket and when he went around the wicket.”

This statemenet reflected his dominance over Warne, who, despite being one of the greatest spinners, struggled to dismiss him. In their head-to-head encounters, Sachin scored 123 runs off 172 balls at a strike rate of over 71, hitting 16 fours and a six, without ever being dismissed by Warne.

Sachin Tendulkar’s record against Australia

Overall, Sachin had an impressive record against Australia across formats, as he scored 6,707 runs in 110 matches at an average of 49.68, which included 20 centuries and 31 fifties, while his highest score was 241 not out.

Sachin takes a dig at umpire Steve Bucknor

When the conversation shifted to former umpire Bucknor, who had controversially given him out on multiple occasions, Sachin responded with a touch of humour. “When I am batting, give him boxing gloves to wear (so he can’t raise his finger),” he said

With 34,357 runs, 100 hundreds, and 164 half-centuries in 664 games, Sachin continues to hold the record for most runs scored in international cricket. He also played a significant role in India’s historic victory in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.
